While the Windows 8 Metro Start Screen is not very complicated desktop software once you get used to it, you may prefer the Start Menu used in earlier operating systems. Labrys Start Menu is a replacement for the ordinary Windows Start Menu, and you can even use it on Windows 7.
Labrys brings a fresh approach without mimicking the visual appearance and layout of the start menus used in earlier operating systems. It is designed to allow users to access command-line utilities and applications faster using both keyboard and mouse. The menu is also compatible with touch-capable displays and supports even Hi-DPI displays.
The start menu allows for fast navigation in the list of applications, which is arranged in alphabetical order. You can display the list in two different modes: normal and compact. The compact mode displays items in a relatively smaller space, and you can activate or deactivate icons in both modes. The ability to adjust menu width allows you to make more prudent use of your computer screen depending on its size.
You can type either a command or search term in the same box for more convenience. Labrys automatically completes commands based on your usage history. The program displays jump-lists for applications providing them but does not yet support the removal of the jump-lists.
Labrys Start Menu does not affect normal computer usage because it requires minimal system resources. The program is compatible with Windows 7 Service Pack 1, 8, 8.1 and 10 Technical Preview. It comes in both English and Russian, and you can use it free of charge for non-commercial purposes.
